7: Shining - X - Varg Utan Flock

I’m not sure what it was about 2018 but quite a few bands came out with albums which while on their own perhaps were not spectacular but they were huge improvements over previous output. Shining is a good example of this X - Varg Utan Flock is probably the best overall album since V - Halmstad which came out over ten years ago. Now I’ve liked some of his output in the intervening years but mostly it’s been a song here and there, for the first time in a long time we have a whole album of decent songs. While they keep at their mostly black n’ roll as they’ve been doing for a few years now there are a few more passages which brings back some of the older days. Just enough to keep it interesting.

8: Shining - VII: Född Förlorare

Things are not always as they appear, last time I had Shining on my best of list they made number five, this year they’re number eight. As such one would assume that this years album is inferior to the last, one could hardly be more wrong. VII: Född Förlorare is a huge improvement over 2009’s VI: Klagopsalmer, while I liked the previous one quite a lot, it was just always a bit off, with VII: Född Förlorare it somehow feels a bit more like Shining again. That said it’s not Shining of old, and I do wish they’d just dirty it up a bit and get back to some of the complete misery of the earlier albums.

5: Shining - VI - Klagopsalmer

Shining has with each release progressed further from their black metal roots to something more akin to a black / dark rock band. I’ve slowly come to accept it, though I still hold their second album as my favorite. Despite that I like this, I like it a lot, probably not as good as V - Halmstad, but quite logically the next step. I already look forward to VII - Född Förlorare due out early 2010.
