Sisyphean were another new find this year, cleverly marketed as
dissonant blackmetal which is not only an apt description but
probably helped it in a year which saw releases from many of the bands
it was being compared to. Their previous full-length clearly shows
some of the dissonant tendencies albeit not quite as fleshed out as
they are here, Illusions of Eternity is a bit simpler and more of a
straight forward blackmetal album. Here they clearly doubled down on
that aspect but without losing sight of the larger whole and still
ending up with well composed and memorable songs. The album is neatly
split in two parts with the first and fifth very short
synth/industrial tracks each opening to three proper tracks, this
lends itself to comparisons between the parts but having gone back and
forth I can’t ultimately say which one I prefer or which I’d consider
stronger. It’s simply too good an album for that. Highly anticipating
what comes next from this Lithuanian quintet.
